uPVC windows are engineered to be well sealed into the building fabric to achieve high levels of air and water tightness, delivering excellent energy efficiency and acoustic insulation to the home. A recent study by the CSIRO of newly built homes in Australia, found that houses with uPVC window frames recorded much lower air change rates than most other houses, due to the better sealing achieved with these windows. A less leaky home will be better insulated and thermally more comfortable all year round.
The correct installation of uPVC window frames is essential to maximize the energy efficiency performance of these high performance windows and thereby maximise the consumer return on investment.
This means that the installation process requires internal and external finishing that minimises gaps to maintain the high performance rating of the uPVC window. The use of expandable foam, or foam tapes applied to the head and jambs of the window, with or without a flexible window membrane fixed around all edges of the window frame, are recommended for a high performance seal.
In order to provide some guidance to Australian builders and window installers who may be less familiar with uPVC windows, the uPVC Windows Alliance has written a short guide to provide an overview of the installation process. This guide provides information to assist with installation of new or replacement windows and should be read in conjunction with the window manufacturers’ instructions and the Australian Window and Glass Association’s Industry Guide to the Correct Installation of Residential Window & Doors.

The uPVC Windows Alliance in co-sponsorship with Deceuninck Australia has also developed the following video guide outlining the step-by-step installation process of uPVC windows with a pre-attached timber reveal. It should be noted that this method of installation with a timber reveal attached is an alternative approach taken by some window manufacturers here. Both installation with and without an attached reveal can be supported by our written installation guide. Please view the video below:
